TUESDAY, October 7, 2008
9am - 4pm MACHINE APPLIQUE Pat Sloan
Beginner to intermediate skill level - Learn all the tips and tricks on how to prepare your designs for fusible work. You will practice the blanket stitch and a few other stitches that many machines have. Also discussed will be what gives a piece the folk art look and how appliqué enhances the style. I will discuss quilt design, use of color and fabric to create the folk art look. Sign up with a friend for double the fun! Supply list available upon class sign-up.
9am - 4pm FABRIC BOXES/BOWLS (view finished project) Nannette Berkley

All skill levels welcome - If you were part of this class last year, you know how much fun we had! If you missed the class, well here is your chance to do it. Students may work on a box or bowl. The bowl is best for new students to learn the basic skills. Supply list: Sewing machine that can zigzag, quilting pins, needles, machine needles, black machine weight thread, rotary cutter, mat, ruler 3 x 12 or similar, Sharpie marker for paper, fabric marking pencils, scissors. Kit fee $15 includes fabric; stiff interfacing, trim.

9am - 4pm WHITE WORK/BASKET Karen Phillips-Shwallon
This beautiful stuffed white-work and dimensional appliqué basket is a 30” x 30” design with sculpted flowers and a bird of stuffed white-work. Embroidery techniques in an ornate basket create this wall hanging or center-plate for an heirloom quilt. Students will be taught a variety of embroidery techniques, dimensional appliqués, shadow and stuffed work. Pattern fee $30.00 and includes complete technique information. Supply list: fat quarter of muslin, variety of embroidery flosses, scrapes of flower and stem colored fabrics. Full instructions for tracing the design onto the fabric, progression of the design to the fabric are part of class.

9am - 4pm WILD AND FREE (view finished project) Pat Sloan
All skill levels - This class is all about asymmetrical designs, appliqué that is large and lots of fabric. The focus is on developing the background with a concentration on fabric selection and placement. Also discussed is the use of color and asymmetrical design elements including shape and placement of the appliqué pieces. This workshop offers students extensive one-on-one advice on color and fabric selection. The pattern is Ma-Ma’s Garden. Supply list available upon class signup.
9am - 4 pm BALI WEEKENDER BAG (view finished project) Nannette Berkley
For this class you must know how to use your sewing machine. This beautiful multi-colored bag will complement almost any outfit and it is loaded with pockets! Supply list: Sewing machine, #90 sewing machine quilting needles, a variety of thread—basic such as black and gray, a spool of top stitching thread (black is always a safe choice), a piece of template plastic 11” x 17” size, 1 yard of medium weight interfacing, 1 yard of 45” fusible batting, quilting pins, rotary cutter, mat, marking pencil, scissors. Kit fee $30 which includes the fabric (3 yards, you can pick out your own lining) for the bag, plus a pattern to take home.
9am - 4pm STUFFED WHITE WORK - DAY II Karen Phillips-Shwallon
Day II continues this beautiful basket. Students will be taught a variety of embroidery techniques such as Herringbones, buttonhole, fly, chains, Turkey work, and French knots to name a few. Dimensional appliqué such as whole cloth ruching, coin edged ruching, extended 1850’s ruching as well as shadow and stuffed work.
6:30pm Lecture: From Then to Now Pat Sloan
Real quilts are such a joy to share. This lecture/trunk show features quilts that Pat has made over the years. Pat discusses her creative process and what inspires her to make a quilt design. Discussion will include creative techniques and how each quilter can use them to spark their own new creative flow. Bring a friend for this lecture and meet Pat after the lecture to discuss any of the quilt designs you would like to know more about.

9am - 4pm CUPCAKES AND QUOTES Pat Sloan
Beginner to intermediate - Join Pat to learn a whole collection of tips and tricks about fusible appliqué, embellishment and design. You will learn how to apply quotes and sayings to your quilt. Supply list upon class sign-up.
9am - 4pm TOOTHBRUSH RUG (view finished project) Nannette Berkley
All right - this is a PJ party! Don’t forget to bring your toothbrush.(Just kidding) This class is for everybody; you do not need to know how to operate a sewing machine, you don’t even need one! No sewing, no crocheting, very little cutting and you are learning a bit of history along the way. We will be making a small rug using a modified toothbrush. If you wish to start from scratch you will need at least nine yards of fabric or just grab those old ugly cottons you thought were so pretty and will turn them into a useful rug. Kit fee includes starter strips, pattern, toothbrush needle. Additional packages of strips will be available for purchase at the retreat. Kit $20.
9am - 4pm STUFFED WHITE WORK - DAY III Karen Phillips-Shwallon
Day III continues this beautiful basket. Just imagine three days of working on one project and what progress you will make. You will be confident in making a bevy of stitches for this project once you go home!
